Curated Sparks
Each spark is an invitation, not an announcement.
The salon posts one spark at a time. Members answer from wherever they stand — a surgeon, a set designer, a translator — and the thread becomes the artwork.

A kind of reverse sublime
Dağhan Dönmez, from a letter to the salon, 27 September 2026 · translated from the Turkish
Just as in Wim Wenders's film Wings of Desire. In the film, one of the angels who drift above the city of Berlin, listening to people's thoughts, asks to give up his immortality and become an ordinary, embodied, imperfect human. When a piece of armour falls on his head from the sky, he wakes half-conscious and sees the blood on his head. He smiles. He returns to the happiness of small things, of ordinary things. Against Kant's concept of the sublime — that blend, in short, of admiration, awe and divinity — it is the beauty of the ordinary that captivates. A kind of reverse sublime!

Which film frame still lives in your mind?
Cinema is the art of the frame — yet the frames that matter most are the ones that follow us out of the theatre. A hallway in Kış Uykusu, a train platform in Cinema Paradiso, a river spirit in Spirited Away. Beyond the Frames is the salon's cinema room: more than a hundred films to watch, and the questions they leave behind. Which single frame from a film has stayed with you for years — and what does it keep asking you?

Wander within
The farthest journeys happen without leaving your chair.
Choosing a spark can be a way of travelling — not outward, but inward, or deep into someone else's world. Wander into the world of an author and see how your own thoughts look from inside their house; sit with a question long enough and you meet a version of yourself you had not been introduced to. Some people cross the planet to find who they are. Here, a painting can be a port of call, a question a mountain pass, and the self you discover on the way home is the souvenir. Pick the spark that pulls at you the way an unfamiliar city name sometimes does — and let the reading be the travelling.
The shape of an answer
An experiment, and the sentiment it left behind.
A good response here is not an essay — it is a small report from an experiment. Name the city you were in when it happened: Istanbul, Lisbon, a train between two places. Then name what you actually did — the page you re-read, the painting you stood in front of, the question you carried into an ordinary afternoon. Then what it left in you — the sentiment, however unfinished: a restlessness, a softening, an argument you lost to a sentence. One honest paragraph in your own language is enough; the thread will do the rest. You do not need to reach a conclusion. Reaching us is the conclusion.
